Some of the most memorable stops around the Smokies are the quiet ones. Historic Harrisburg Covered Bridge offers a chance to step away from the busy Parkway and see a piece of Sevier County history that has remained part of the local landscape for more than a century.
Built in 1875 over the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River, this historic timber bridge is still in use today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It makes a worthwhile stop for families, history lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for a slower scenic drive near Sevierville.
Historic Harrisburg Covered Bridge sits east of Sevierville, just off Old State Highway 35 near U.S. 411. The covered timber truss bridge was built by local craftsman Elbert Stephenson Early in 1875 after an earlier bridge at the site was destroyed by flooding.
The bridge is closely connected to the former Harrisburg community, which once included mills, blacksmith shops, a school, a doctor, and a post office. As roads changed and the community gradually disappeared, the bridge remained.
By the 1970s, the structure had deteriorated significantly and was at risk of being lost. Local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution helped raise funds for its restoration, and the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Additional rehabilitation has helped preserve it for continued use. Today, it remains one of Sevier County’s notable historic landmarks.
A glimpse into old Sevier County
The bridge provides a tangible connection to the area’s earlier communities, transportation routes, mills, and craftsmanship. It is a simple way to experience local history without spending hours inside a museum.
A peaceful change of pace
For families spending several days around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, a short scenic drive to Harrisburg can provide a welcome break from the area’s busier attractions.
A memorable photography stop
The wooden structure, covered roof, surrounding greenery, and river setting give photographers plenty of natural texture and character to work with.
Interesting for multiple generations
Grandparents may appreciate the historical significance, parents can share the story with children, and younger guests can experience what it is like to pass through a historic covered bridge that is still part of the local road network.
Easy to pair with a scenic drive
The bridge can be incorporated into a broader drive through the eastern Sevierville area rather than requiring a full-day commitment.
Historic Harrisburg Covered Bridge is the kind of stop that fits beautifully into a slower Sunshine Around the Bend day. Instead of filling the itinerary from morning to night, take a scenic drive, explore a little local history, and give your group space to enjoy the landscape.
Then head back to the cabin for the parts of the trip that don’t need an itinerary: cooking together in the gourmet kitchen, gathering around the fire table, enjoying the wooded views from the wraparound deck, or settling into the game room for the evening.
